Orthopaedic  Massage & Manipulation

Orthopaedic massage is a form of rehabilitative massage that addresses physical problems often accompanied by acute or chronic pain, nagging discomfort, postural issues and/or limited mobility. Orthopaedic massage focuses on restoring pain-free range of motion throughout the body and integrating complete structural balance. Special attention is given to correct assessment of the problem, proper treatment and client self-care. All work is done without discomfort to the client. Assessment consists of various range of motion tests to find which joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments are affecting or being affected by the pain. Very specific treatment follows, different from typical massage. The planned and carefully managed manual movement of the musculoskeletal system, extremities, and spine to produce increased motion is called orthopaedic manipulation. The term is sometimes used to denote a precise sequence of movements of a joint to determine the presence of disease or to reduce a dislocation. In the case of fractures, orthopaedic manipulation can produce better position and alignment of the fracture.
Orthopaedic massage can help relieve:
Acute or chronic pain (back, neck, shoulder, hip, etc.)
Postural misalignment (including the hips)
Decreased range of motion
Sports injuries
Frozen shoulders and frozen hips (Adhesive Capsulitis)
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Rotator cuff injuries
Tendonitis
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Recurring headaches and migraines
Stiffness and tightness
Nerve tingling, numbness
Disc problems (ruptured, herniated, bulging)
Muscle cramps
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

advanced remedial massage

Muscle, joint and structural problems can cause pain, disrupt your sleep patterns, energy levels and even our ability to concentrate on the simplest of tasks. Advanced remedial massage offers a wide range of techniques that can be highly effective for many conditions, especially:
Joint pain and restriction
Back ache
Sports and training injury
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
Frozen shoulder
Neck pain
Migraine
Muscular aches and tension

sports injury

Remedial massage is a deep massage, to create the conditions for the body’s return to normalhealth after injury or with muscular-skeletal disorders. It is used to treat chronic muscular-skeletal imbalances, strains, sprains, broken bones, bruising or any injury where the skin is intact.  It is particularly effective in treating sports injuries. Deep tissue massage removes blockages, damaged cells, scar tissue and adhesions left after injury, speeds up recovery and encourages more complete healing. Remedial massage is also used for conditions created by lifestyle for example Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) and back pain. It is designed to increase the flow of blood and lymph, particularly in the injured areas.
Sports Massage:
speeds up recovery time - allowing you to train without discomfort,
means that the muscles repair more easily with less scar tissue,
because of reduced tension it optimises training at a higher level,
restores and maintains a healthy structure - essential to avoid chronic conditions developing and to keep in top condition,
improves whole body awareness in general - you know when you’ve trained enough or when it is time for another massage,
encourages relaxation - which leads to better concentration and focus

reflexology

Reflexology is the skilled application of pressure to areas on the feet. Reflexology is generally relaxing and may be an effective way to alleviate stress. The theory behind Reflexology is that these areas correspond to organs and systems of the body. Pressure applied to these areas affects the organs and benefits health. Reflexology will correct any imbalance in your body.
Reflexologists use foot charts to guide them as they apply pressureto specific areas. With Reflexology we can:
encourage relaxation,
aid flexibility by working on the muscles and joints of the body through the feet and thus movement becomes easier,
increase the circulation of blood with all its oxygen, nutrients and hormones,
assists the removal of exerted waste products,
decreases tension and feelings of anxiousness,
improves recovery time after surgery or injury,
improves the  immune system,
improves body awareness, which aids posture.

theraflex system

Over 20 years of research and design has led to the research and design of the Theraflex system.  Theraflex relieves mechanical back problems by increasing the subtleness and flexibility of the spine.  It is a revolutionary, safe, non-invasive treatment, gentle, passive and progressive.  The majority of people suffer back problems at some time in their life.  At least 95% of these problems are of a mechanical nature.  To function correctly the spine must be supple and elastic, like the spine of a healthy teenager.  Loss of suppleness is natural after time and ageing and is accelerated by injury and inflammatory conditions. The Theraflex System can treat the following:   Sports injuries, shoulder pain, dowagers hump, idiopathic scoliosis, back pain/ache, excessive kyphosis or lordosis, prolapsed and degenerated discs, sciatica, bulging discs, sacroiliac joint-dysfunction and buttock pain.

hot stones massage

Water-treatment stones are placed on specific parts of the body, promoting relaxation and helping to open up meridians or energy pathways. Pretreated heated stones allow the therapist to perform very deep tissue manipulations, releasing toxins, reducing muscle pain, improving circulation and calming the psyche. Cool stones are used alternately with hot stones while receiving a thorough massage while using organic oils. This treatment is pure indulgence at this best.

hopi ear candling

Hopi ear candles are hollow tubes made of cotton, soaked in beeswax, honey and herbs. When lit, the candle acts like a chimney, causing the warm air inside it to rise and creating a vacuum at the bottom. This vacuum gently stimulates the ear, facilitating removal of excess wax and impurities.
How are the candles used:
The treatment should be carried out in a relaxed, draught free atmosphere and the patient should lie in a comfortable position on his/her side with the head supported on a pillow. A small cotton towel or flannel should cover the hair. The lit candle is inserted carefully into the outer ear and the flame is allowed to burn down to within a short distance of a marked red line, when the candle is removed gently and extinguished in some water. The practitioner then massages gently around the ear, using draining movements down the neck. The procedure is repeated with the other ear, and then the patient lies on his/her back for gentle drainage massage on the face.
What are the benefits:
Hopi candles can be used for many conditions including deafness caused by excess wax, congested sinuses, irritation in the ears, ringing or noises in the ears, tinnitus, rhinitis, glue ear, colds, flu, headaches and migraines. As their action is so gentle, they are particularly suitable for children.
What are the effects:
In most cases the treatment is extremely soothing and relaxing, leaving the patient with a sense of well-being and reduced pressure in the ears or head. A little warmth is felt, and hissing and crackling noises are heard, with a little popping.  The initial effect can be an improvement in hearing or freer nasal breathing and an improved sense of smell. However, improvements can continue occurring for a day or two.

swedish massage

Swedish massage is the most popular type of massage.. It involves the use of hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial layers of the muscles to improve mental and physical health. Active or passive movement of the joints may also be part of the massage. The benefits of Swedish massage include increased blood circulation, mental and physical relaxation , decreased stress and muscle tension, and improved range of motion.
There are numerous physical benefits associated with the use of Swedish massage:
loosening tight muscles and stretching connective tissues,
relieving cramps and muscle spasms and decreasing muscle fatigue,
loosening joints and improving range of motion,
increasing muscle strength,
calming the nervous system,
stimulating blood circulation,
firming up muscle and skin tone,
relieving symptoms of such disorders as asthma , arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome , chronic and acute pain syndromes, facial pain, headache,
speeding up healing from injury and illness,
improving lymphatic drainage of metabolic wastes

chinese cupping

Cupping is the term applied to a technique that uses small glass cups or bamboo jars as suction devices that are placed on the skin. There are several ways that a practitioner can create the suction in the cups. Generally, cupping is combined with acupuncture in one treatment, but it can also be used alone. The suction and negative pressure provided by cupping can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system (which makes it an excellent treatment for high blood pressure). Cupping is used to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, and even cellulite.

indian head massage

As implied by the name, the Indian Head Massage is a form of massage therapy created in India thousands of years ago.
Through a variety of different techniques, the massage works to release any blocked negative energy in the body that may be manifesting itself as disease or injury in any one of the seven Chakras (energy centres) of the body. It does so by applying pressure to certain points on the neck, shoulders and head that correspond to each Chakra (which is a similar approach to that of reflexology). This unblocks the Chakras, and allows for a free flow of energy around the body, restoring the individual to optimum health and feelings of wellbeing.

" Now mid 40's and a life of intensive training, chronic muscle tension was inevitable. Susi's sports & remedial massage treatment is now part of the training routine; she has played an integral role in sorting out all the built-up issues of long-term training and chronic muscle tension. I am now back to training as hard as I was in my 20's, just with an appreciation on how vital Susi's ongoing treatments, advice and support is to this commitment. "
